Paper Towel Shortages? I don’t worry about them – thanks to this $19 antimicrobial kitchen wonder

The disaster happened this morning.
There was the typical rush and crowd in our kitchen.
My older daughter Jeanna was complaining about the lunch I’d prepared. Patrick, my husband, was rummaging for his protein shake in the fridge. Our golden retriever Sam was weaving through the human traffic. And then, it happened — with a BANG.
“I’m sorry mommy!”
The whole family fell silent and turned around towards Ellie, my 7-year-old. She had knocked over an opened bottle of blood-red pomegranate juice. It was full and it spilled all over — on the counter, down along the cupboard, and all over the floor.
45,730 paper towel sheets each year
Now in a normal situation, I’d reach for a bunch of paper towels to quickly contain this mess. But here’s the problem.
“You’re literally throwing $273 into the wastebasket…”
As a family, we spent so much on paper towels. We often ran through an entire roll in a day. In a typical month, we burned through several 8-packs. I tried calculating once how much we used in a year — 45,730 individual paper towel sheets. That’s madness.
Yes, paper towels are convenient. But if you’re like my family — and I don’t think we’re unique — you might be spending $273 or more each year on paper towels. In other words, you’re literally throwing $273 into the wastebasket, because each paper towel is reusable ZERO times. Once you soak or wipe or dust something with it, it’s time for it to go in the trash.
And not just the wasted money
There’s also the environmental cost. We’re trying to do our part, reduce waste where possible, be a little more green. But it’s hard to be green when you’re chopping down trees so you can shove them into the trash, after you’ve soaked up a little bit of pomegranate juice with their dead fleshy pulp.
Maybe I’m being a bit dramatic. But I think it’s important to highlight why paper towels shouldn’t be this automatic reflex, so that whenever there’s a little problem, we tear off a square or two or five of one-and-done paper towels. But what are the alternatives? Well I’m glad you asked.
A perfect breeding ground for bacteria
We tried those those blue and yellow and purple microfiber cloths. You know, the ones made out of some mysterious plastic material. They are soft and they absorb liquids like crazy. That’s their big selling point, but it’s also where the problem lies.
“Microfibers are the perfect breeding grounds for scary and dangerous kitchen superbugs…”
Each time I used these microfiber washcloths to wipe something up, I’d rinse them and squeeze them out. It didn’t matter one bit. Each and every time, they become disgusting in a matter of hours or days.
They start to smell bad — mildewy and moldy and dirty. They start to scare me, because I’m sure they are loaded with all kinds of bacteria and each time I use them, I’m just spreading that bacteria around.
Like I said, this is just a consequence of the unnatural microfiber material. It makes for a perfect breeding grounds for scary and dangerous kitchen superbugs. So yeah. After running through a packet of these, I said thank you, but no. I don’t want to expose my family to cholera.
Don’t use cotton washcloths!
How about just some cotton washcloths? At least they’re not plastic, right?
“Cotton washcloths get need to be machine washed all the time…”
Yes and they are worse, in just about every regard, than the microfiber cloths I just talked about. The cotton ones get just as gross, just as quickly. But they don’t absorb very well. And they need to be machine washed all the time — otherwise, they look disgusting.
So when you factor in the detergent and the electricity to constantly wash these cloths, you’re probably not saving a penny, and maybe even losing money, over just tearing out sheet after sheet after sheet of paper towels.
Finally, a modern alternative
So there I was in the kitchen, looking at my frozen family, and the pomegranate juice drip-dripping off the counter and onto the floor. The whole gamut of options ran through my mind.
Would I reach for the paper towels, which we still had stored in the garage, even though we never used them? Would I use some nasty microfiber washcloth, or a dingy and ragged cotton square to try to contain this mess?
Nope. I had something much better, which we now use for all kitchen, window, floor, and counter problems. It’s as convenient and easy to use as a paper towel — but it doesn’t need to be thrown out like a paper towel. It absorbs incredibly well and yet it doesn’t harbor bacteria or look dirty or gross.
You might think I’m exaggerating. But it’s all true. Let me tell you a story.
A chance encounter
I was at the grocery store last month, standing in the paper waste aisle — where they keep the paper towels, napkins, etc. I was piling the stuff into my cart, because like I told you, my family used to burn through rolls and rolls of paper towels each week. And then, I heard a familiar voice behind me.
“You some big money on all these paper towels you’re buying…”
“Hey Kath!” It was Sophie, a former co-worker. It was great to see her again. We chatted for a few minutes and then she looked at my cart.
“Boy you’re really piling on the paper towels,” she teased me. “You might like this thing I found online last week. We just ordered a pack and it’s incredible. It’s exactly like paper towels, but completely reusable.”
“Huh?” I asked her to tell me more.
“Instead of paper, they’re made from bamboo fiber,” Sophie explained. “Here, I’ll send you the link. It could save you some big money on all these paper towels you’re buying.”
“Thanks Soph,” I told her, and made a mental note to check out these towels as soon as I get home. And here is what I found out.
Like paper towels, but 100% reusable?
Just like Sophie said, these BambooFresh towels are woven from extra-fine top-grade bamboo fibers. They’re called Bamboo Fresh, and they look, feel, and act just like paper towels. But are not paper towels in several important regards.
First off, these BambooFresh towels absorb super well, even better than regular paper towels. That’s simply because of how fine-grade these bamboo fibers are.
Second, you can squeeze them and rinse them out. They’re not paper, remember! Bamboo fiber is much stronger and more resilient than paper. These BambooFresh towels won’t tear or break easily. So after you rinse them out, they are good to keep going. You can leave them to dry, and use them later today, or tomorrow, or next week — however many times you want.
And here’s the absolute best part. Remember the trouble with reusable washcloths? How they get dirty and dingy and gross, and full of dangerous bacteria? Well, that won’t ever happen with BambooFresh towels for one incredible, natural reason. I’ll tell you all about it, but first let me finish my story.
The best thing about these towels
The pomegranate juice was still spreading throughout my kitchen. So I tore off a single sheet of BambooFresh towels. I used it to sop up the counter, rinsed the sheet out under water, and repeated the process. Soon the counter and the side of the cupboard were done and dry.
And here’s where we get to the best thing about these bamboo towels.
I have a drawer where I keep BambooFresh towels I’ve used before for serious cleaning. I go through them in cycles. When I first tear off a sheet, I use it to clean off countertops, to dry food containers, even to soak up grease from fried chicken or bacon. These are the most delicate tasks, where I only use fresh towels.
But I don’t throw these towels away. I wash them out, and I use them for less “dainty” tasks. These become the towels I use to wash windows, or with spray cleaners around the bathroom, or when it’s time to soak up pomegranate juice off the floor.
“I will be rinsing and reusing all these towels dozens of times more…”
So that’s what I did. I reached into that drawer, pulled out a couple of sheets of washed and reused BambooFresh towels, and cleaned up the mess on the floor. When I was done, I rinsed them out and put them aside – eventually I will throw them into the washing machine to make sure they are completely clean again.
And that’s it. Incredible. A huge mess storm in the kitchen. cleaned up with 3-4 sheets of BambooFresh towels. I will be rinsing and reusing all these towels dozens of times more. Which brings me to the main benefit of using these amazing things.
Huge money savings
I bought one $19 roll of BambooFresh towels last month. At the rate we’re using new sheets, I think we will be able to go for 4-5 months before buying a new one.
“I estimate that by the end of the year, we will be $232 richer as a family…”
Like I said, I go through these towels in cycles. I only tear off a new sheet if I need it, for special areas like countertops or for tasks where I want to make sure the sheet is pristine. For all other situations, I wash and reuse the towels, over and over.
No wonder I’ve saved about 36 rolls of paper towels already (my calculation).
I estimate that by the end of the year, we will be $232 richer as a family — that’s simply the money we won’t throw into the waste basket along with the paper towels we once used like crazy.
No worries about shortages
I’ve been watching on TV as people line up at retail stores, stockpiling dozens of rolls of paper towels.
I’m so glad I don’t have to do it. I’m not afraid of running out. I have three rolls of Bamboo Towels, and I know that will tide me and my family over for the next few months at least.
So I’m not just saving money, but I’m also saving my peace of mind. I know I won’t have to jostle and fight with angry and desperate people at the supermarket over the last available roll of paper towels if worse comes to worst. And that’s not all.
And a nice environmental benefit
And of course, these Bmaboo Fresh towels are good for the environment too. Instead of ripping up 6 or 8 or 15 paper towels for one spill, you won’t create any extra waste. A single BambooFresh towels absorbs better than a paper towel sheet, plus it’s completely reusable.
“Bamboo is quick-growing and sustainable…”
And because bamboo is basically a grass, I feel doubly good. It’s not like cutting down trees which are used for paper towels. Instead, bamboo is quick-growing and sustainable. so while you save money, you also reduce waste and you benefit the environment
No germs, no smell
Before I go, I promised to tell you one last thing. Remember how microfiber cloths and sponges get gross and smelly and dripping with bacteria, often in just a few hours after you start using them?
Well, this doesn’t ever happen with BambooFresh towels, regardless of how many times you use them. You simply rinse them out and allow them to dry and they will stay pristine.
“BambooFresh towels actually repel and eliminate kitchen bacteria…”
How is this possible? The answer lies in the magic of bamboo once again, which has natural antibacterial and anti-microbial properties.
In other words, while plastic washcloths and microfiber towels are perfect breeding grounds for dangerous bacteria, the natural bamboo fibers used in these BambooFresh towels actually repel and eliminate those bacteria.
So these bamboo towels continue to look and smell fresh. And you can feel safe and comfortable using them to clean up your counters and sinks, without spreading dangerous bacteria.
My whole family is using these now!
I’m amazed by these BambooFresh towels and I recommend them to anybody. They work just like paper towels — in fact better, because they absorb better and have much more resilience.
But the fantastic thing is how they can be reused by simply rinsing them out. It’s incredible, both to your wallet and to the environment.
You don’t have to keep paying for roll after roll of paper towels, just to throw them into the trash. And because of the natural antibacterial strength of bamboo fibers, these BambooFresh towels never get gross or smelly or filled with germs — unlike microfiber towels or cotton cloths or kitchen rgs.
It’s a win-win all around, and that’s why I love these things and suggest you get some too right now!
